"God is love." (I John 4:16)
These three short words speak to the heart of the Good News which we proclaim as Christians.
- Love is what binds God in an eternal relationship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- Love is what motivated God to create the world.
- Love is what describes being created in God’s image.
- Love is what was corrupted by sin and redeemed by grace.
- Love will be what triumphs in the end when God raises us up with Christ to live with him forever.
Who Is Jesus?
"We love because he first loved us." (I John 4:19)
"This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him." (I John 4:9)
Genuine love – caring, forgiving, reconciling love – is hard to find. In fact, apart from God it is impossible to find. Sometimes we may came close because we are made in God’s image, but we always fall short because we are frail and flawed.
God’s great desire is to draw us into his divine love. God offers us a way to overcome our failures to live genuine loving lives. By turning to Jesus, we have access to the very source of love which is God. As we learn about Jesus and follow his example, we grow into the kind of person we were created to be.
Why Have a Church?
"No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is made complete in us." (I John 4:12)
We discover the breadth and depth of God’s love as we love one another. Love describes a relationship. That is why God calls us to live in community – so that we might make his love complete by loving others as he has loved us.
No church family is perfect, but we at the Union First Presbyterian Church strive to be a caring, forgiving, reconciling community of faith. In our worship and fellowship, we seek to demonstrate God’s love in real and tangible ways.
What Does the Church Do?
"He has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister." (I John 4:21)
Loving God and loving others is central to our faith. Often called the Great Commandment, it is at the heart of Jesus’ message. (Luke 10:25-28). We are to be as devoted to God as Martha’s sister Mary was (Luke 10:38-41) and as compassionate toward those in need as the good Samaritan was (Luke 10:29-37). Working together as a community, we at Union First Presbyterian are committed to demonstrating God’s love for others as we serve those in our community.
